I loved this prayer.
(*My husband, teary-eyed but shaking with laughter at the end of the above benediction, turned to me and said "Oooooh, Rick Warren just got schooled.")

And wasn't it a beautiful thing?
I thought, "Rick Warren, that is a SPEECH. Not a prayer." ;)
I enjoyed the "...when yellow can become mellow" but what made me sniffly was the "...That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. And Amen. And Amen."
Seriously. Amen.
P.S. I avoided Rick Warren.
i agree- that benediction was just awesome.
I'd liked it too...but I sure hope we aren't saying that praying should be competitive. I saw nothing wrong with Rick Warren's prayer either. I don't think anyone got schooled or that the intent of the guy giving the benediction was to school anyone.
Anonymous, you make an excellent point.
Praying, even at a civic/press occasion like this, can't descend into a competition. I hadn't thought about that, but you're right. It also can't be critiqued like it's literature or even a presidential speech - not by me, at least, since I believe that prayer is talking to God. Even with notes and a mic.
And I think it's safe to assume - that 'showing up' R. Warren never even crossed Dr. Lowery's mind. Or Pastor Warren's, for that matter. I have to assume, from what I read, that they are both sincere, humble men.
Thanks for commenting.
Dang! I like your husband:)
"Lift every voice and sing....."
